Ohio and Pennsylvania steelhead alley report
Thank
goodness for anti-locks, I just missed two deer by
inches. It's 6:05 AM. I only have a few minutes to
type before the guys show up. Live from the
river... Yesterday we had myself, Mark, Jeff,
Travis and Kurt out on the water. We all headed
different ways and everybody caught fish. The Catt
blew out but the rain didn't impact any of the other
streams much. There are fish in all of the streams but
they are tough customers. Most have seen it all
the last couple of weeks. Our team did well yesterday
despite the conditions. Mark and my group was a no
show so we spent the day scouting and fishing and
talking to landowners. I probably walked or 8
miles of river and only saw a few anglers. I guess
when it gets a little tough everybody gives up.
I guess were all getting a little spoiled.. Well it's
been beautiful weather to fish in even if the streams
are low. Were not giving up... were still fishin and we were rewarded well for our
efforts yesterday. Well I gotta run. Good Fishin..!! Don

Steelhead Alley Report
We
watched the weather closely last night. It paid
off...... We had a great day on the stream and saw only
a hand-full of anglers and better yet no other
guides..!!! Most of the streams are still low
but the rain did color them up a bit. You can bet
we are watching the weather and flow gauges tonight.
If we don't get more rain the bigger streams in Ohio and
NY will be the best bet but if we get enough to bring up
the stream levels I'm betting on a big run. I
can't say enough about how dedicated the team of guides
have been the past couple of weeks. I know I have been
racking up the miles on the truck. One of our
guides saw every stream from the Catt to the V today.
This is the type of dedication that has kept us in the
fish during the low tough conditions. Good
Fishin..!! Don

WE
NEED RAIN BAD..!! The weather guy is calling for
showers the next few days but I don't think we are going
to get enough for a blowout. Lots of fresh fish
are staged at the stream mouths but we need rain to
bring them in. Watch the weather. There are fish
in the streams now but there tough customers. Most
anglers aren't having much luck. We had a terrible day
yesterday but Mark hit them good this morning. I
had the day off and all fly orders are shipped. Good

Ohio and Pennsylvania Steelhead Fishing Report
Sorry I
haven't posted a report recently. My laptop hard
drive got filled up with pics and I have been to busy to
mess with it. I have guided every day since my
last report in October. This has been our busiest
fall ever. We have been very busy and most days we have
had four or five guides on the water. Working
together has helped us to stay on fish. Conditions on
steelhead alley have been extremely tough. We haven't
had any rain to speak of in weeks. All of the
streams are very low and clear and we haven't seen many
fresh fish moving. There are loads of fish at the
stream mouths and the next time we get high water I
would expect a major run. Most of the fish in the
streams have seen a lot of pressure the last couple of
weeks and very light presentations are required to fool
them. We have been running nymphs down to size #16
and tippets to 5x in the gin clear streams. For
bait its a single egg game. I had two guys put
over twenty in the net one day last week on singles and
we couldn't buy a fish on my fresh brown trout egg sacs
on the same day. Gotta keep it short, I have a trip
today. Hopefully we will be able to keep our
reports more up to date now. Our team of guides
just bought seven new laptops. All have card
readers and CD burners in them and they have mobile
wireless inernet. This should make it easier to
update the website when were on the road. Good
Fishin..!! Don

Steelhead Alley Report
Put some
miles on the truck today. Chasing Green water...
Our brief window on the Catt in NY ended this morning.
It was nice fishing her a little. Its like a new
river to me, the flood last summer changed her for the
better. At least the sections I fish.. Last nights
rains hit the west side of the alley much harder. I'm
standing in a roaring Cattaraugus Creek at 9:00 (650
CFM) and 50 miles to the east our guides on Conneaut are
fishing low and clear conditions. So we headed east
exploring. The next stop was Chautauqua but it was too
high even though I could see fish shooting up.
Next we hit 20 mile and struck silver. We found a
bunch of fresh chromers, vis wasn't bad but it was high
enough to make wading difficult. So we headed for
Elk Creek. More chromers.. The huge masses of fish
pooled up in the Middle Elk finally got a little water
to run in. We have been watching fish run all week
in Ohio even in the low clear conditions. Last week not
many fish were running the Pa streams but there were Pa
fish pooled up by the hundreds in the deepest pools and
they had a bad case of lock jaw. With the Pa
streams up and flowing a nice push of freshies are
running right now and those lock jaw holdovers have
dropped their guard a bit. Our guides in Ohio on
the Grand and Conneaut today didn't see a lot of fish on
the move but everybody caught fish. Fishing has
been feast or famine this past week and chasing the
fresh moving fish can be challenging. Travis
managed to put twenty one in the net with one fly
fishing angler by 12:30 yesterday on Conneaut.
When his guest called it a early day, Travis went out
and landed twelve more on his own. Jeff took his
group to the same section of Conneaut this morning and
the fish were gone. They had to move to find the fish.
We got quite a bit of rain south of the lake ( Trumbull
County Ohio) last night (.68) inches and hopefully that
water will make it down the Ohio streams a little
tomorrow. Our Ohio streams need water bad. Leaves are
becoming a real problem and it will not take long for
the tanic levels to build up in the water if we don't
get some more rain. Black Tanic stained water is
almost always terrible for the fishing. Hot flies
have been blood dots, glo spawns, and golden nuggets but
quite a few fish have fell for crystal minnows in olive
shinner and white and black buggers as well. Shinners
and egg sacs and single eggs are all good choices on the
spinning rod Jack at Snug harbor in Conneaut had
shinners tonight. Most of the bait shops
along the Alley haven't been able to get any shinners
the last couple of weeks. . Good Fishin..!! Don

Ohio and Pennsylvania Steelhead fishing Report Late
Update
Travis told me that the water from Fridays rain finally
caught up with Conneaut. We thought it peaked
yesterday and expected it to be low and clear today. BUT
It actually came up a little from yesterday and it also
got a little more color and flow but its still low. Same
goes for the Grand. Elk and the smaller Ohio
streams are low and clear. Trout told me the
morning started off slow but they ended up finding a
nice pod of fish and landed a half dozen with one over
10lbs. Still no chance of rain in forecast until
Thursday evening. Good Luck..!! Don

Ohio and Pennsylvania Steelhead fishing Report
Low and
Clear.... That about sums up our steelhead fishery right
now. We had high hopes after last Fridays rain but
the dry ground soaked up the water and the stream levels
hardly even changed. There are loads of fish in Elk
Creek and lesser numbers in the Ohio streams BUT it's
real tough out there. We have had multiple guides
on the water every day and our guests are catching them
but the low and clear conditions have the fish very
spooky. Many of the fish that were in the lower
rivers have disappeared. I think they ran back out
to the lake. The guys trolling the Estuaries, harbors,
and around the breakwalls are creaming them. I'm
going to take the driftboat up tomorrow and fish the
Estuary. With no rain in sight until Thursday I
think the next couple of days are going to be tough.
Once we get some rain I look for the fishing to explode.
Travis has a group out in Ohio today and I'll try to
post another report soon. Keep your fingers
crossed that we get some more rain. Good
Fishin..!! Don
