November and December is the time to pursue a trophy lake run Brown Trout in western NY. The area is starting to draw attention worldwide as a top destination for a opportunity at a trophy Brown Trout. Lake Ontario is being managed for optimum baitfish production. Forage is abundant for for the implants.  Ten pound fish are common. Due to a increased catch and release philosophy and continued stocking , I am seeing more and more 15 plus pound fish taken. The western N.Y. streambeds offer many prime locations for the fly fisher to play his game. People are defiantly taking notice of this  trophy fishery.
Unfortunately there are heavy crowds on many of the streams. Sure, there are several smaller streams where one can escape the heavy crowds, but these Brown Trout have a strong tendency to return to the exact stream where stocked. Most of the successful anglers I know have adapted their game to deal with the crowds. Often this involves arriving at the river very early to secure a productive fishing spot. Other times it means fishing when the weather is at its worst and the fair weather anglers are nestled on their couches.
Several of the streams have fairly reliable water flow in the fall due to dam's and draw down of the Erie canal. One stream or another is usually fishable every day. Each high water period brings up a fresh batch of fish. It is a multi-specie fishery and Chinook, Coho, Atlantics, Browns and Steelhead can all be caught in the Oct-Dec time frame.
The streams receive a good run of Chinook and Coho Salmon in early October and by November their are still kings on reds everywhere. The browns follow them up and gorge on their eggs. Its not uncommon to be fishing for Browns over A pair of kings on a redd. The Browns will be directly downstream of the very visible spawning kings. The trick is to present your fly to the less visible hungry Browns below the redds, without one of the Kings snatching up the offering. Where else is a twenty pound plus king on the fly snubbed.
Spin fishing is also a very popular and successful method for tackling these brutes as is the highly successful Canadian Center-pin float fishing method. Some rivers offer spey fishing opportunities but crowds and river size can limit this method as well as the centerpin. Regardless of the method you employ every knot has to be perfect and your drag working perfectly to stand a chance against these brutes. Light tippets and lines are a must. These river wary fish love to head for snags and wood.
Myself and my staff of fully licensed New York state guide's offer a select number of trips to western NY each fall.  We limit bookings to a minimum of two days. All trips are custom designed around your needs, with the traveling angler in mind. We can and will handle all of the lodging details. There are many options from chain hotels to bed and breakfasts.  All of our trips are all inclusive and only top quality gear will be used. There are no hidden costs all you will need are your waders and fish license. We use only the best of the best rods, reels, and lines when pursing these trophy fish. We have developed our own hand tied fly patterns for the fly fisherman. All rods are guaranteed so if you should happen to break one while battling a fish it will be covered.  We are so confident of our ability to put you on the fish we offer the "You catch fish or you fish free" policy on all of our trips.
Lets go fishin!  Don

NEW YORK TRIPS

In addition to our guided Ohio and Pennsylvania trips we offer a select number of trips each Fall to Western, NY and the Cattaraugus Creek. Steel headers often refer to the Catt as the "Crown Jewel" of our Great Lakes tributaries. We fish the Catt during the month of October. It is a beautiful stream and the early fall fishing is great. Give me a call and we will discuss a trip to the Catt. Don Mathews NY License #4348

We also have a presentation "Finding Fish on Steelhead Alley" available to put on at your seminar, event, or club meeting. We have assembled a awesome slide show and have all of our own equipment. We offer this presentation at a very minimal cost, and your audience will learn from it. So Please contact us....

Many lodging options exist along "Steelhead Alley" and Interstate I-90.  Here are a few lodging options located near to the streams that we fish.
