Facts
All
of our streams in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York hold fish during the winter months
December- March
MOST YEARS ALL OF OUR STREAMS FREEZE OVER IN JANUARY AND
FEBRUARY
New
York Steelhead fishing is best in October thru December
but most years the Cattaraugus Creek s the first stream
to get a run of fish
Pennsylvania Steelhead fishing peaks in November and
December but gets runs as early as September. They
are the most heavily stocked streams on "Steelhead
Alley" and hold the most fish per square mile.
Ohio
Steelhead fishing starts in October and lasts until
early May. Ohio streams are usually fish the best
in the spring.

3-25-09 Ohio Fishing Report Floated the
Grand today. Bite was a little off in the morning
but it heated up in the afternoon, everybody was double
digits or near it today. Mike brought his spey
flies from California. We got a awesome strong
buck on a a fly I dubbed the "Big and Nasty" It was a 6
inch long articulated fly. We swung it on a 12'6 two
hander swinging behind one of my homemade Rio T-14
Tungsten tips. A great day on the river.
Didn't really rain much today but it's raining now.
I don't think the rain will have a big impact on things.

Steelhead Alley Fishing Report
Yesterday before the Mayville NY show ended I got to
spend a little time talking steelhead with friend and
fellow Guide John Nagy. John's book "Steelhead
Guide" should be in every serious steelheaders library.
John and I use very similar techniques and I highly
recommend his book. John and friend
Tony DiBenedetto brought a very impressive display to
the show. They had dozens of John's beautiful tube flies
on display and Tony had his H2O testing tank. It
replicates the current in the stream allowing you to see
your flies from the fishes prospective. These guys
have taken tubes to the next level. Meticulously
balancing their flies so the they ride horizontally in
the current just as a baitfish does. If your
into tube flies John's the man to talk to.
Spending a little time talking with John and seeing his
display got me all fired up and I literally talked
Jeff's leg off on the ride home from NY with my new tube
fly ideas.
3-23-09
Awesome fight from this Ohio buck
This Ohio
hog is still swimming around in Ohio
I got home
hooked up the boat and hit my tying bench. I tied up a
half dozen tubes in a new Creek Chub pattern I'm calling
the Space Invader. We find that steelhead hate
nest raiding Creek Chubs and will attack them if they
swim into a nest. I figured the fish in the Grand
would be hot in the morning so a float was in order.
We put the boat in at daylight and were in double digits
by 8:30 so I guess my intuitions were correct. It
was a rocky ride today....The Grand was low but not
clear. This makes it a tough float. I
clocked a few rocks real hard today. Sure was glad
I was in the Hyde instead of a Canoe. I put one
gouge down the side that was at least 1/16 inch deep in
the aluminum. It would have shredded a fiberglass
boat. When you hit a sleeper in the middle of the
river at full tilt you know it. Please be careful
no fish is worth dying for.. Days like today are the
hardest to float the Grand because the poor visibility
hides the rocks that the low water brings up. I
can't make any excuses for the tree I hit though.
oops... Nobody complained about the rocky ride today.
The fishing was terrific. We probably had 50 fish
on the line. It was one of those days where they
were just plain hungry.
3-23-09 Fish
pounded swung flies today
For the
short term the fishing should remain excellent. All of
the streams on the alley are fishing and I have reports
of fish being caught darn near everywhere. We are
forecasted to get 1/4 inch of rain on Wednesday.
If the weatherman is right that could effect the fishing
for a few days. Everybody is fishing tomorrow so
I'll post a report in the evening.
This is our
school weekend and we are full with 21 students for this
springs class. We are ready to go and I'll see
everybody at the Comfort Inn in Austinburg on Friday.
I'm looking forward to meeting everybody that is
attending. We are taking reservations for the Fall
class now. It will be Nov 6th, 7th, and 8th.

Steelhead fishing report Myself and Jeff spent the
day talking steelhead at the "Future of Steelhead
Fishing Show" in Mayville NY. The show went great
and we got to meet a lot of serious steelheaders today.
Our booth is between
Whitakers and
John
Dimartino's booths. It's a real honor for me
just to talk steelheading with these guys.
Dick and Travis guided a group of six fly fishermen
today. I called Dick at 8:30 this morning and they
were fishing Ohio and already had 11 in the net.
You wouldn't even believe me if I told you how many they
landed today. Lets just say they spoiled them.
My brother Lance hit several streams today and said he
ended up finding a good pod of fish this afternoon
but he surprisingly reported slow activity at a couple
of our usual hot spots. So there are lots of fish
to be had on some of the streams but there not
everywhere. Flow wise all of the streams on the
alley are at a fishable level now with the exception of
the Catt. I'm stuck indoors tomorrow at the show
but if anybody wants to float the Grand on Monday
morning I am available. The fishing should be very
good next wek and we have open guides on Mon, tues and
Wed. Give me a call 330-565-5457 Good Fishin..!!

Steelhead Alley Fishing Report I'll let the
pictures do the talking. Fishing has been nothing
short of spectacular. All the streams are at a fishable
level. We saw quite a few fresh ones the last couple of
days. Most of the fresh fish are in the pools and
high stick nymphing techniques have been producing.
Not a lot of fish on gravel in most of the Ohio streams
yet.

Ohio Steelhead fishing report Conner's first
day of Steelheading. Paul, Chico, and 10 yr
old Conner came up from Tennessee for a few days of
steelheading. They stayed at Indian Creek Campground in
Geneva and I met them there way to early.. It was
their first trip to the alley and we fished skinny water
to find a little solitude. We never saw anther
angler until 10:30. We only fly fished today.
Fish pool for day one was 5 for first, biggest, and
most. Conner was a quick student and made $15
today. A fun group to fish with. Across the
Alley most of the streams were a nice flow today but ice
and mud falling in from the high walls had them off
color. Walnut, Elk, Conneaut, Chagrin, Rocky,
the V and the ditches all fished today. I
even saw a couple of guys fighting fish on the Grand
tonight. Everything is fishing now. We were
out on four streams today and the guys caught fish on
all of them. The Pa fish are on gravel but most of
the Manistees in the bigger Ohio rivers are still holed
up. Chartruse Jigs and waxies was deadly today on
the holed up manistees and I'll get some more pics up as
soon as get them. We have guides available for Wednesday
and it looks like it will be a good day. Good

Steelhead Fishing Report Unseasonably warm temps
made for a great day on the stream. We fished Ohio
today and everybody had a great day. I'll have
lots more pics soon. Haven't got long so I'll keep
it short. Everything except the Grand is fishing.
Lots of fish are in the streams but we didn't see many
fresh ones today. Even though the flows are good
expect stained water on most of the streams from farm
field runoff. We have guides available Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday and it looks like the fishing
will be good. Give me a call if you want to get in

Steelhead Report Started in NY and worked
our way back across the alley. It was a scouting mission
and Dick Keagy joined me. Dick just got back from
Florida and he's all tanned up and ready to steelhead
fish.. We had several landowners to stop and see
today so we really didn't fish much. I was
saddened to hear one Ohio landowner had recently sold
their property and now only a select few friends and
family members can fish there.
I was lucky enough to gain access through a good
recommendation from the former owner to continue to fish
the property. Yes I do fish private property on
occasion. No I do
not guide on private property in Ohio. We guide on
property where the landowners are nice enough to let the
general public fish or on park lands. It's only a mater of time
before the new owner will get mad and everybody will be
locked out. I really don't go there much but every
time I do I see people fishing right under the posted
signs. Please don't trespass, there is plenty of
places to fish without pissing off a landowner.
On a more positive note. The fishing was very good. I
hit the best fish of the day out of twenty mile. A
relatively fresh 30 inch buck. We hit a few
everywhere we went in Pa and NY. They dumped
50,000 smolts in 20 mile today so be careful not to harm
our future. Fished mid Elk for awhile and there
were good numbers of fish to be had. We stopped at few
Ohio streams but everything in Ohio was still a day or
two away. Myself, Jeff, Dick, Travis, and Greg
will all be out tomorrow. I'll post something in
the evening. I'm betting that tomorrow will be good and Sunday
will be a great day. Good
Luck.!! Don

Steelhead Alley Fishing Report Finally a
break from the rain. The Streams all reached flood
stage this week but they are on the drop now.
Tomorrow some of the smallest Ohio ditches, Elk, Walnut,
and the mile tribs will fish. Chagrin and Rocky
will fish Saturday but I think it might be Sunday before
the Connie or Vermillion come down. Forget the
Grand for awhile. If you do go out tomorrow you
might as well sleep in as it will probably be slushy in
the morning but with clear sky's and warming temps the
afternoon should be slush free. Myself, Dick, and Travis
will be out tomorrow and I'll try to post something in
the evening. On a side note.. If you like
the reports you get here why not help us out. In
order to stay number one on the search engines we need

Anglers
who travel to the area are in luck. Dan, Eric and
the team at FishUSA
are there for you. They stock what you will
need. Don't waste your money at the marts.
FishUSA will have

Gary and his wife Dot run a great baitshop near Walnut

Poor Richards
I have been a customer there since Gary bought the place
many years ago. The prices are good.
The selection is great, with everything you need to
catch fish, fly or spin. They clean fish and will
exchange your fresh caught steelhead for a smoked fish
on the spot. Check them out..!!
Jim runs Folly's End fly shop and campground. Jim
bought the shop a few years ago from my good friend
Larry. Jim has done a great job of keeping the
shop well supplied for steelhead fishermen and done some
nice improvements to the campground. Clyde Murray
has worked at the shop for years. He is a
steelheading icon. Clyde's friendly advise has caused
the demise of countless steelhead. The shop is
located on the banks of Elk Creek in one of the most
productive sections of stream. You can park on the left
side of the driveway going down to the shop. From there
you can access the stream to fish. Please stop in the
shop and let them know though.
Bruce an
Terry have run the Grand River Tackle shop for years.
They have a great selection of Steelhead gear as well as
lake fishing tackle and live bait. Bruce is a
steelheading pioneer. They are located near

as anybody you will ever meet. He runs a very neat
and tidy shop that has a great selection of fly fishing
gear for the steelheader, trout fisherman or saltwater
angler. His fly tying material
selection is great. They also have lots of quality

There is a nice launch down the street that puts you about 6
miles from the sandbar. A lake Erie fishing hot spot in
recent years. Erie outfitters has shiners, bait and
licenses.
Area Camp Grounds
Open year round
Jim and Clyde at
Folly's End have a great fly shop on site
at their riverfront campground. You can access one of the best sections of Elk
Creek from their campground. They offer daily stream parking and camping.
As well as seasonal camping. If your near Elk Creek stop in. They will hook
you up.
Uncle
John's Elk Creek Campground is located right on the
stream near the mouth of Elk Creek. Fishing is
very good on their property. John is a great guy
and he let me hold my Boy Scout Merit Badge Classes in
one of his cabins for free. The cabins are for
rent they are new and are very nice. The showers
and restrooms are great The place is always clean and
well kept. It is very angler friendly. He offers
daily stream front parking for a small fee.
